Have you checked the name on your driver’s license, identification card and social security card lately to be sure that they match your legal name?
Many people don’t understand the importance of keeping their name up to date on their ID. If you ever need a document notarized, the name on your ID must match the name on the document that you want to have notarized.
I had a sad experience today because of this issue.
I received a call for General Notary Work to notarize an important document. This was a document that will change a young couple’s life forever, as well as the lives of their children. Unfortunately, I was not able to provide notarization service because the person’s name on their driver’s license didn’t match the name on the document. Her driver’s license was in her married name, and the document was in her maiden name. Unfortunately, she didn’t have any other form of acceptable identification with the name that was on the document. Therefore, I was unable to notarize the document.
For this couple, it puts their lives into a holding pattern. The situation can be resolved with some effort, but if the ID had matched, I would not be writing this blog! If you have ever had credit, purchased property, or signed any other legal documents with a different name than what you are presently using, it is vitally important that you take whatever steps are necessary to get the names to match.
Please take my advice, check your ID, and make sure that the name matches on any account or document that is important to you!
